Before starting a self-priming centrifugal pump, the pump casing must be completely filled with liquid, or the pump must already contain liquid. Once the pump is started, the impeller rotates at high speed, forcing the liquid in the impeller passages toward the volute, thereby creating a vacuum at the pump inlet. This vacuum opens the suction check valve, allowing air from the suction pipe to enter the pump and travel through the impeller passages to the outer periphery. The pump housing features an axial return-flow design, comprising a suction chamber, a liquid-storage chamber, a volute chamber, return-flow ports, and a gas–liquid separation chamber.
